About the author

My name is Matt Ridout, I've been working in digital marketing for 9 years; worked for agencies and currently Head of SEO at fashion startup called Farfetch. Try to test my own theories.

  1. Not like I’m partial or anything (ahem..frog in my throat..ahem)
But Bill Slawski’s “SEO By The Sea” is a must for that list, because he picks apart search engine patents like they were being skinned for dinner. (smile)

  2. lol of course you’re not partial! I would have added a few others but liked 25 as a number!

  3. Thanks for sharing a good list of resources!

  4. Let me get this straight; you are saying “every SEO” should visit these sites? Don’t you mean “social media” people instead?

Further; Digitalpoint?? You must be joking, right? I can think of about 7 “other” search related and design forums that I would recommend waaaay in front of that place. Matter of fact; I would actually recommend that NO ONE ever visits that place. Sorry; but that’s my opinion just like your opinion is stated as well. I’m thinking many more people would certainly agree with me as well…..again, my opinion. 🙂

  5. hmm, no http://www.webmasterworld.com, http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/ , http://www.wolf-howl.com, http://www.seobook.com/blog/
I’m confused, this list seems to be geared more towards promotion than that of Optimization..

  6. @ Doug – Thanks for the comment – I know there are plenty of other forums out there, but from my own personal experience I picked DP.

@ jake – Matt Cutt’s blog does provide interesting posts and insights but also posts about his personal life which, to be honest doesn’t help me with my Job.

And a lot of people have said this list is geared towards promotion, well yes it is. One of the best Link building methods is link bait with social help, this improves SE positions which is what I get paid to do. I will not list 25 seo blogs as they do not help me directly with gaining SE positions.

Thanks for the comments though guys 🙂

  7. Matt, you’d do a better job of grabbing the recipients attention of you throw them some strong anchor text…

  8. Thanks for the comment Wayne. It’s not my intention to do so, plus the amount of traffic thats been sent through to each should be enough.

To be honest I’m surprised by the number of emails I’ve received asking why their site hasn’t been included (some big names too)

  9. You wrote this:

“One of the best Link building methods is link bait with social help, this improves SE positions which is what I get paid to do”

Link baiting with social sites helps you with search engines, and it’s one of the best methods? I could not disagree with that more. 🙂 I think you should ask Google if a link from Sphinn or digg or any other social site that “you” can put there yourself is better than a real site owner linking to you from an authority type website, and doing so naturally. Matter of fact; I do not see one site you list that would help me or any other designer/SEO to do their job better. If you could point out just one I should visit regularly maybe I can be educated. I only visit sphinn to see what the social media types think is good and not good. It’s a form of entertainment for me.

  10. I’m not saying that a link that is posted on social sites should be used as a direct link building source, in fact most social sites do not add any credibility to a site. The reason you need them is to promote link bait if your link building strategy involves this (which it should).

As far as “educating” people, that is not the purpose of this list. But if you’re telling me that by working in seo and you do not visit any of these sites then I believe you are missing out on valuable insights and resources. You can of course use other resources to get certain jobs done, I would be interested to know what resource you use to spot increases in keyword trends other than Google’s own “Trends”?

  11. You are assuming that we all think “link” stuff is top priority for a site to do well. I don’t happen to believe that at all from all prior experiences in this industry. Here’s the deal; you posted a few sites that “you” visit. I just want to inform you and other readers that our industry is very vast and full of good resources that you and others into social media big time are not aware of. Many of us do not do social media and do not need to do so. You won’t find us with profiles on digg and stumbleupon. You said that we “should”. I say it’s simply not needed. We disagree totally on things, so let’s just agree to disagree.

  12. Well having good website design, structure etc should be standard practice for any web design/agency anyway, using all the latest seo methods. Once this is done, aside from good content generation im afraid link building is still one of the main factors in SE positions, based on my experience in a very competitive keyword environment.

You are pointing out the obvious with my title choice but what have I been saying about link bait? If anyone created a list on whichever subject not everyone will agree, simple.

If you are lucky enough to have another department manage your social media then congrats, if you don’t use it at all then you are missing out on a great revenue stream and promotion tactic.

Like you said, lets agree to disagree 🙂

  13. I love the idea of the post, but most of these seem to be related to blogging, social, etc. I was hoping for a more comprehensive list focusing on tools or resources.

Good post though – and def. a thought provoking angle judging by the comments:)

  14. OK yes; I must be “missing out” then. All other SEO’s and designers I know of must be missing out as well. 😀

I just noticed another one of your sites is that marketing “ninja” site. Yeah boy; every SEO should certainly know about that and even pay the 3K for it. After all; shouldn’t we all view a few SEO’s on video? LOL

Where do I sign up? LOL

  15. I don’t want to lose my temper here and I would be quite glad to have a skype conversation with you about this to battle this debate out.

Im not trying to promote anything here, I use these sites, thats all. I would say you have a very closed point of view of seo, thats including your “list of preferred seo websites” on your site 😉

  17. *** And a lot of people have said this list is geared towards promotion, well yes it is. ***

It’s not really a list for SEO people then. It’s a list for SMO people.

  18. I must admit that this list baffles me as well – sorry but it really isn’t very useful as an SEO guide. SEO does not require or need social media or social traffic, it’s all about ranking top spot in the SE’s and these sites won’t tell you how to do it or even help you do it in any meaningful way as far as links go. Link baiting is a poor method and short term at best.

I do see where you are coming from though – using social media to drive traffic but this kind of traffic isn’t the type that spend money or click ads – they are readers not buyers. Yes you can build some links with it but given the huge time investment to do this – you will never outrank the SEO pros who can develop much better links at a much faster pace.

Let’s face it – you don’t get many optimized anchor text backlinks using social media – you get a lot of crappy links using your name/url/or click here in the anchor text. This doesn’t build keyword authority for the terms you are trying to rank well for.

I am not trying to entice an argument with you – I am quite successful at SEO and just wanted to point out that this is not the way I would do things and quite frankly I caution people to avoid wasting time using social media. I am not saying your method won’t work – it’s just not the best way to go about SEO.

Again, I don’t mean to Troll you and please check me out before getting upset – I do rank well for some of the most competitive keywords online – “make money online” and related terms.

  19. Hi Grizzly,

Thanks for the post, I understand a lot of people do not see my angle on this. I am in the process of writing a new post that will hopefully help you guys understand where I am coming from and why social is important to seo.

  20. I look forward to your new post as I think maybe we are all coming at this from different perspectives and I’m sure I have misunderstood your point of view. Some clarification will no doubt get us all back on the same page. Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to develop this further.

  21. Do you think that HitTail may belong on this list?

  27. Thanks for such a great list and i dont think that you are promoting it. If people think that sharing knowledge is promotion then its useless to do seo. I am stumbling this page here http://lindsayhogan.stumbleupon.com/ and will share it with my whole stumbleupon group.

  28. This is very useful list, but there are some other useful websites also.
