Alexa explained ?

Alexa is an extremely powerful tool and is owned by Amazon and is used to rank and list different websites. But only the most experienced Alexa users are able to determine a website's popularity from its Alexa rankings, for apart from the website's ranking one also needs to consider factors like links and traffic.

One of the best ways to get your site noticed by Alexa, is to link to other sites, which would mean that they would also link to your site. As long as you manage to keep relevant links on your website and link to other sites which get a lot of traffic, you can rest assured that Alexa will feature your website.

If you are a webmaster and you are looking to improve your SERPS ranking you might consider installing a spyware onto your web browser. But obviously only webmasters should do that. Because the Alexa toolbar logs and keeps a record of all the sites one visits, it's a great help for webmasters. Alexa uses this information to compile rankings and statistical lists. These lists are of immense help if anyone is to find out which other sites, users have also visited apart from the current website. One must remember that Alexa cannot be 'technically' termed a spyware for it retrieves no personal and private information. You can always create your own Alexa toolbar by using your Amazon affiliate code. If you then place the Alexa toolbar on your website, you will get credited every time someone buys something from Amazon, using the Amazon button on your Alexa toolbar. You can even place a link to your website in the Alexa toolbar that you create.

Alexa rankings range from 1 to 5,000,000, and can sometimes go even higher still. Rank 1, obviously signifies the highest traffic for that site, while anything below 250,000 should mean that your site is getting a decent amount of traffic. Alexa rankings are used to chart the growth or fall of traffic rates or the success or failure of advertising campaigns over a given period of time. By checking Alexa ratings you can see how your rivals are doing compared to your website. Other search engines also pick up the information compiled by Alexa, this could mean a rise in your SERPS and increased ranks for your website.

A small drawback for Alexa is the fact that it works on Internet Explorer only, but the drawback fades in comparison to Alexa's benefits like being able to check the statistics of your own website. Every time you visit your site, it's an extra hit for unlike the general public you are using a browser with the Alexa toolbar installed. Therefore webmasters who have Alexa installed, make a big difference in Alexa rankings of websites: 500 page views a day by webmasters can increase your site's ranking much more than what triple the amount of general surfers will.

Use Alexa for a month and you'll see how good it is.
